Glamping - Africamps at Oakhurst, Wilderness

Africamps offer a boutique glamping experience for the entire family to enjoy accross South Africa. With 12 camps situated all throughout the country in some of the most beautiful nature reserves, estates and farms that South Africa has to offer. Across country the tents are structurally identical in layout and design, with each location adding their own special touch to the experience from what you can see, do and learn. These tents offer the camping experience with the canvas walls and doors that can roll right up maximising the indoor/ outdoor living experience with a classic South African built in braai on the deck. Along with all the luxurious creature comforts such as heated blankets, an aircon/ heater as well as an indoor fireplace and en-suite bathrooms.

Africamps at Oakhurst farm is located on a 180-year-old dairy farm in the heart of the Garden Route, the Wilderness. Roughly 10 tents are nestled amongst the forest and bush very private from one another all with a view of the stunning Oteniqua mountain range that can be enjoyed from the deck or better yet, your personal wood fired hot tub. It can be arranged before hand for preheated hot tubs to enjoy upon arrival.

What to do

This farm is the perfect place for adventure enthusiasts with many activities on offer. There is a mountain bike pump track that leads to the start of up to 16km worth of forest single track for mountain biking, hiking and running. Even less experienced hikers can enjoy a 4km walk through the natural forest to the top of a waterfall.

A tour of the dairy is definitely worthwhile, from petting the baby cows to seeing where the milk is extracted and stored, then sent to our tents to enjoy in their breakfast baskets.

Horse rides are suited for all ages, lead by an experienced guide through the forest and fields. Their friendly horses take you on a scenic tour of the surrounding farm.

A short 20 minute drive gets you to Map of Africa, a viewpoint from the top of Wilderness which also makes for a great spot for paragliding! We joined Lets Fly Paragliding on a flight launching off Map of Africa, flying for roughly 10 minutes above the ocean and Kaaimans river train bridge. A truly exhilarating feeling!

Every evening you’ll find me relaxing in the wood fired hot tub. It is best to light these early in the day to get the process started. Occasionally stir the water, keep the fire fuelled, get in and enjoy your own eco friendly outdoor hot tub with the setting sun.

What’s in the tent

Each tent is identical in design and structure with all the nesesities to host a family. Entering the tent, one can roll the doors right up opening the kitchen, dining and lounge area onto the deck. The kitchen is fully equipped with gas appliances, all the essential crockery and cutlery to cook up a delicious meal to enjoy at the dining table in the open plan living area. The indoor fireplace makes for a cosy spot to relax on those cold winter nights with some games around the coffee table. There are 2 bedrooms accessible from either side of the kitchen, both with queen sized comfy beds and heated blankets. The one bedroom has a bunk bed which I know (having many siblings) tends to be the kids favourite spot. The bathroom can be accessed from both bedrooms. The front deck is where lots of time is spent around the braai and picnic table, with two comfortable lounger chairs.

Meal Baskets

As a glamper you can have breakfast and/or dinner delivered to your tent. These are ‘cook your own’ baskets filled with delicious freshly prepared food ready to cook from the freshest local produce available.

Breakfast Basket - Delivered early in the morning we had coffee to enjoy with rusks and fresh farm milk from their dairy, before whipping up some farm eggs, bacon and sausage. To top off with fresh orange juice, bagels, jam & cheese. Also included is fruit, muslie and yoghurt to get you ready for a busy day ahead!

Braai Basket - a delicious assortment of local South African meats, along with garlic bread, potatoes, gourmet butternut, salads and a sweet treat for afterwards. Everything is ready to go so light that fire and enjoy!

DIY Burger - everything you need for building a tasty burger. Fresh lettuce, buns, tomato, gerkins, onion and yummy steri stumpies. It is said that lots of the milk produced at Oakhurst farm is used for sterie stumpies!

These baskets range at every camp depending on local supplies but are all absolutely a favourite!

These tents were made by local South Africans and each camp is constantly supporting small businesses and promoting a new way of camping across South Africa. Our stay in the wilderness was magical and I would highly recommend! Have a look at our YouTube video below
